The Community Is Still Rising
Dena Rise Up brought neighbors together with signs, music, and a message
On June 1, over a thousand people marched through the streets of Altadena. Survivors, neighbors, and supporters walked from Fair Oaks Burger to Figueroa Drive. They carried hand-painted signs, wore shirts that said “Altadena Not For Sale,” and told the truth of what happened here.
They called the action Dena Rise Up. And they meant it.
“No Warning. No Help. No Accountability.”
Some of the signs looked like framed artwork. Others were raw and handmade. Every one of them carried a story. This was not just about property. It was about dignity.
People danced. They marched to a Latin beat. Displaced residents spoke at the rally. They called out state failure and real estate vultures. They reminded us that Altadena is not just a location. It’s a community.
Local writer Taura Scott shared what it meant to witness the destruction and then the march.
“Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I know Altadena will be the strong community it once was.”
She’s right. Recovery is already happening in the way people keep showing up.
